Sights from Australia: Melbourne

Kathy and I stop for a photo on the Yarra River, in front of Melbourne's CBD. A tram passes Christmas banners at the edge of Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens. This classic tram is one of a collection of early cars that operate on Melbourne's touristy City Circle route. The city's public transportation network is built on the streetcar, much as Los Angeles' used to be before the 1950's. The kites of wind surfers fill the skies of Hobsons Bay in Melbourne. Rowers make their way down Melbourne's Yarra Rivver toward the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Looking down Elizabeth Street toward Melbourne's Flinders Street Station, which was decked out for Christmas. Your typical Christmas day family photo… On the beach. Celebrating the holidays in summer does have its advantages. We took a Christmas day visit to the beach at Jan Juc, a little over an hour south of Melbourne. We had great weather, though Christmas day brought torrents of rain and even hail in the city. Rock formations at Jan Juc, at the beginning of the Great Ocean Road. Rock formations at Jan Juc, at the beginning of the Great Ocean Road. The beach at Jan Juc, at the beginning of the Great Ocean Road. Sovereign Hill, a mining museum and generally old-timey place in Ballarat, an hour and a half or so outside of Melbourne. Kathy gets to know a kangaroo at a ranch and wildlife park near Koo Wee Rup. Rocks and greenery in the Phillip Island Nature Park, home to the area's last remaining colony of Little Penguins. A koala gets a little too close to tourists at a conservation center on Phillip Island. Shortly afterward, a ranger moved in to bag him (her?) for release in a less crowded setting. Kathy's sister Laura, the inspiration behind our journey down under, and Kathy at Phillip Island Nature Park. Looking north at boats and clouds from the pier at Cowes, on Phillip Island. Looking back at the Melbourne skyline from the ferry to Williamstown, one of the city's earliest shipping ports. One final shot with the two of us, standing in front of the cliffs of the Phillip Island Nature Park.
